National Institutes of Health (NIH) Warehouse Building

The site of the $10 million, design-build NIH warehouse is located on the north end of the NIH campus in the Burdens Creek area in Research Triangle Park, NC. The project includes a main 25,000-SF building with a warehouse, loading dock, and administrative space as well as a guardhouse, site roadways, and landscaping.
The total building footprint is approximately 25,000-SF. Infrastructure and utilities were designed and installed to accommodate possible future expansion (approximately 15,000-SF) of the warehouse for occupancy by EPA.
The primary goal of this project was to accommodate all NIEHS warehouse operations on the NIH campus. The completed warehouse meets current storage requirements and allows room for future expansion while providing a space for associated administrative personnel. The new NIEHS warehouse eliminates the need for off-site storage leasing and consolidates NIN management and procedures.
The facility employs cutting edge technology to meet sustainability and energy requirements. The goal of the project is to attain LEED Platinum certification and obtain Net-Zero Energy consumption.
Site design, equipment and technology selection, and enhanced commissioning were incorporated into the project when planning the path to achieving LEED goals. Improvements in energy performance were incorporated into the design to achieve Net-Zero Energy. The building is fitted with Photovoltaic (solar) panels to generate electricity and a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heating and cooling system to reduce energy consumption while maintaining building functionality.
